Audience: 3rd – 5th grade  

Description:  

In this energetic and welcoming class, students will explore the foundational dance styles of musical theatre, including ballet, jazz, and classic Broadway-inspired movements. Led by teaching artist Darion Dewhirst, young performers will learn basic technique, dance terminology, and the unique qualities of each style through movement, guided videos, and fun choreography. The session will end with a special audition-style masterclass, giving students a chance to put their new skills into action. Whether your child is new to dance or ready to grow in their performance journey, this class builds confidence, coordination, and a deeper love for musical theatre. 


Artist Bio: 

Darion Dewhirst is a musical theatre performer and teaching artist based in Birmingham, Alabama. Originally from New Orleans, he trained at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and is currently pursuing a BFA in Musical Theatre at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Darion has performed professionally with Red Mountain Theatre for over three years, with credits including Frozen, Mary Poppins, Shrek the Musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Freaky Friday. With a passion for jazz, hip hop, and musical theatre dance, he is dedicated to creating a supportive and energetic space where students can grow as performers and celebrate the joy of movement.
