Description:

This multi-week workshop provides an in-depth exploration of playwriting techniques for experienced writers. Through structured exercises, peer feedback, and guided revision, participants will develop original scripts and refine their voice as playwrights. The class emphasizes storytelling structure, dialogue, and character development within a collaborative writing environment. Students will have the opportunity to have their work read by local actors in an informal presentation, helping them: 

  • Hear their writing brought to life in real time 

  • Gain confidence in sharing their creative voice 

  • Develop stronger storytelling and playwriting skills 

  • Receive valuable feedback in a supportive environment 

  • Experience the collaborative nature of theatre-making 

Artist Bio: 

David Strickland is a director, actor, writer, and educator based in Birmingham. His directing credits include productions at Virginia Samford Theatre, Terrific New Theatre, and Birmingham Children’s Theatre. He is the recipient of the 2024–2025 Alabama State Council on the Arts Theatre Fellowship.
