Description

On Sunday, March 8, 2026, the Alys Stephens Center will resound with the timeless music of one of gospel’s most revered composers in “A Richard Smallwood Tribute.”

This extraordinary evening will feature the majestic power of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Dr. Henry Panion, III, alongside the combined voices of the choirs of Alabama A&M University, Alabama State University, Miles College, Stillman College, and Talladega College—a remarkable gathering of collegiate choral excellence united in celebration of a musical giant.

This performance serves as a reprise of a nationally presented tribute honoring Richard Smallwood’s extraordinary life and artistry, bringing that same spirit of reverence and musical excellence to Birmingham audiences.

The evening will feature Special Guest Maurette Brown Clark, acclaimed gospel artist and an original member of Richard Smallwood’s legendary ensemble, Vision. Her presence adds a deeply personal and historic connection to the music that shaped a generation.

Richard Smallwood’s songs have inspired generations with their soaring melodies, rich harmonies, and profound spiritual depth. This tribute will celebrate his enduring legacy through many of his most beloved works, presented in the full splendor of symphony orchestra and glorious massed choir—an experience of breathtaking scale, beauty, and joy.

Additional special guests will be announced and added soon, making this already remarkable evening even more unforgettable.

Join us for a powerful celebration of music, heritage, and legacy—an evening worthy of the extraordinary life and artistry of Richard Smallwood.
